The Unity Games Africa 2017 were held in Mombasa, Kenya. The Tanzania Jamat was fully represented at the games with a total number of 372 athletes and spectators from DSM, Mwanza, Arusha, Zanzibar, Iringa and other parts of Tanzania.
The opening ceremony and a majority of the games were held at The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, giving many of our Jamat the chance to get a first-hand look at the school. Besides the sporting events there were lots of other activities to keep everyone busy and entertained. Some of the eye-catching events were the opening ceremony, daily excursions, the Tele match competition on Swahili night, Dance competition on Khoja night and finally, on the final night, the beach party with music from renowned Bollywood singers, at Nyali International Beach hotel.
On the sporting side, our athletes did an exceptionally wonderful job by winning 16 Gold and 34 Silver medals. Team DSM won the medals in the following categories:
GOLD: Throwball, Swimming, Soccer Under-14 and Dance Competition.
SILVER: Darts team event and Men’s open, Rounders, Pool, Swimming, Cricket, Chess, Badminton mixed doubles, Table Tennis Girls Under-14, Ladies singles and Men’s singles open.
Team Mwanza won a Gold Medal in Volleyball, 3 Silver medals in Swimming and 1 Silver Medal in Badminton Ladies over 40 yrs.
Overall it was an excellent performance by Tanzanian athletes.
It was a very colourful and joyous occasion for everyone present at the games, made so by the excellent hospitality and food provided by Mombasa Jamat. Apart from being a sports tournament, this gathering was also a forum for long lost friends to meet and connect, and an opportunity to forge new friendships and relationships.
