Tuesday, March 8, 2016 was International Women’s Day. This is a global event celebrated throughout the world and is also known as the United Nations (UN) Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace. The focus of the celebrations ranged from love, respect, appreciation towards women, to a celebration for women’s economic, political, and social achievements. It was a time to reflect on the progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
As part of the Women’s International Day, all regions had some sort of activity on or around March 8th, be it donations to the civil society, cake cutting, get together etc. Posters were displayed at all Jamat khanas across Tanzania of successful women who have aspired to excel in their lives. The aim was to bring about awareness of issues that successful women have faced at a global level and how their zest for a better life helped overcome the hurdles which came their way.
